Business Woman With A Difference

Turning adversity into opportunity is a quality often admired in entrepreneurs but few people have faced the challenges of 46 year old Londoner and mother of four, Rioch Edwards-Brown.

“…I fully applaud the work that So You Wanna Be In TV? is doing
to help improve the skills of disadvantaged young people…which can help them
to develop the self-belief to achieve a positive employment outcome.”

Vince Cable MP – Secretary of State for Business Innovation and Skills

So You Wanna Be In TV? was started after Rioch’s son was shot and stabbed while in school.  The reason given by the perpetrator for stabbing her son was that he hated him for having two parents at home.  Rather than seek revenge Rioch decided to reach out to reach out to the community.

On the 25th April BAFTA, home of the “British Oscars” plays host to a business woman with a difference.

Using her 16 years in television, she set up a Social Enterprise called So You Wanna Be In TV? a consultancy, training and recruitment service providing free employability and soft skills to at risk, disadvantaged and diverse youths in London. Her model specifically tackles youth unemployment and can be rolled out across all industries.

Sponsorship is raised to provide free places for candidates to attend our sessions with TV professionals who give their time free of charge.

To support her programme Rioch invested £40,000 and went out and won £62,125 sponsorship from some of the biggest brands in the industry including ITV, ITN and Talkback THAMES, the creators of the X Factor.

Rioch unearths talent from inner city London and provides candidates for job opportunities in the media. Young people whose career path is not TV, are signposted into other industries, work experience and training better suited to their talents.

Since May 2010: 259 have received employability skills, ITV have sponsored 20 candidates across their business, 34 have been found work experience and jobs.

BAFTA have now recognised her work by donating their venue for a special showcase event in April for 200 TV Executives, corporates and young hopefuls from the community, leading to mentoring, training, work experience and job opportunities.
